In a world where the list is king, doesn’t it make sense to know what not to eat in addition to what you should eat?

That’s how I look at it and you know how much I love me a good list!

The foods you should never eat are deserving of their own list too, doncha think? But I’ve done one better on this particular list. While I’ve named the culprit in disturbing your peace (health and weight), I’ve also named the hero in restoring your well-being (begin applause now).

Let’s get right to business then and get rolling with this list. If you stick with me, you’ll know how to dodge these negative nutritional bullets and make better choices at the grocery store and when dining out.

Culprit #1: Deep-Fried Anything
Sorry, but if you order deep fried, make deep fried or even use the words deep fried, you might as well look for a cardiologist at the same time. Deep frying is positively the worst possible choice for having anything prepared. And don’t let the words, “lightly fried” fool you either, as in tempura! It’s all wickedness!

Hero #1: Sauteed for Flavor
This cooking technique uses minimal oil (preferably olive oil) and gives your food the flavor and complexity you’re looking for. I sauté my green beans after steaming them in olive oil (not virgin, that’s too fine an oil for heat), a lot of fresh garlic, a little sea salt and a liberal grinding of fresh pepper. Unbelievable taste with very little fat and no bad fat, either.

Culprit #2: White Bread
Thud. Did you hear that? That’s the sound of white bread landing in your gullet. It’s squishy, gooey and gluey and it’s adhering to the sides of your intestines, do you feel it? Blech. Considering the negative nutrition associated with denatured flour, why would anyone make that choice in this enlightened century? Lose the white bread already!

Hero #2: Sprouted Wheat Bread
Okay, check this out. When you sprout grain, then make it into bread, not only is a lot easier on your digestion, it’s packed full of nutrients traditional bread doesn’t have! Consider this nugget: your body looks at sprouted grain as veggies, not starch! That’s good news if your thighs sprout inches just by eating a sandwich with two pieces of bread!

Culprit #3: Shortening and/or Margarine
Solidified fats get that way through a process called hydrogenation, which in turn, makes a multitude of sins called trans fats. Yes, we’ve all heard how bad trans fats are, right? Well, not only does margarine lower ...    Continue

@ 12:15am ET on September 2, 2008 Oh my gosh! I'm a super sinner! I always thought (silly me!!!) that margarine was healthier than butter... I don't eat much of either, but I always bought margarine. NO MORE! Good thing grocery shopping day is tomorrow! I'll definitely keep this in mind while at the store!
@ 4:46am ET on September 2, 2008 I found a margarine that has non-hydrogenated oils...ofcourse it does not say which oils...but I take solace in the fact that they are non-hydrogenated...all the other ingredients look relatively harmless too...am I kidding myself?
@ 5:10am ET on September 2, 2008 whew! i just ate cookies which i think is healthy just to find out it has shortening. I avoid transfat from deep fried foods and all it sources, then i ate food with lots of shortening...oh well, thabks for the info. good research

@ 10:35am ET on December 29, 2008 I use Becel margarine..which I was told was good at a cholesterol class no less..It contains omega 3's and is non-hydrogenated...does this not count as a good choice? Hard margarine is supposed to be the bad one isn't it...Sometimes I find information very confusing..the other 4 I did know about...

@ 10:52am ET on December 29, 2008 I can't say I'm super healthy all the time, but most people should know this information already. The basic rule is to avoid anything purely white. I can't say I adhere to this at all times, but the key is moderation. If you have to swing through a fast food place, make sure you find the time to work it off. If you have a cookie once in a while, it's not going to hurt that bad. Everyone needs to indulge themselves every once in a while!
@ 11:17am ET on December 29, 2008 I must say, I have avoided the 5 culprits in the last 7mos and have lost 41 pounds to date!!! It does take a lot of work to achieve "self-control" but it's better than eating yourself to a grave. I was diagnosed with diabetes and had no choice but to change my eating habits and to add exercise to my new "lifestyle". I feel great. Gone down 3 dress sizes in 7mos. Life is great!!!
@ 10:57am ET on December 7, 2009 I wasn't surprised by any of these. The truth is some of the healthy alternatives aren't as tasty IMO. I don't care for brown rice and no way will I give up cookies LOL. But I have lost weight by giving up pop and drinking lots of green tea and eating whole wheat bread. Some changes are better than none!
@ 12:21pm ET on December 7, 2009 I think that there is a place for ALL foods in our diets. It is ridiculous to say that people should NEVER eat something that is deep fried again. I eat these things occasionally, and I'm 5'3" and my weight tends to fluctuate between 105 - 107.

@ 4:16pm ET on December 7, 2009 I was hoping for some white rice with a little sugar on it wrapped up in white bread and deep fried in shortening. I call it death by deliciousness!
@ 6:58pm ET on December 7, 2009 hahahahaha! since when is brown rice an alternative to white rice? that's like... dirt to cake. white rice has always been a staple in my culture. no way no how am i switching to brown rice. this article makes it sound like you're truly missing out..ugh. maybe i could try mixing it, though... hmm.. not a bad idea. worth a shot! not giving up white rice, NOPE! i'm 107 pounds and healthy as can be. if it's not killing me, its not gonna kill you!
@ 10:48pm ET on December 7, 2009 Thanks so much for publicly unmasking the truth about the margarine v. butter myth! I get so tired of hearing people give butter a bad rap. It's actually good for you in moderation! So many people don't realize that!
@ 11:38pm ET on December 8, 2009 I rarely comment here but this blog post really bothered me for several reasons. Lets start with the title. I am not a feminist but "5 foods a woman should NEVER Eat"....are you serious? If there were certain foods that you should NEVER eat (i will get to that in a second)then wouldn't that apply to everybody? Lets not contribute to gender biases and the idea that women must have these "perfect" and desirable bodies.
Secondly, are you really advocating that these foods should NEVER be eaten? I mean, literally from the title you are telling people to never enjoy a dinner to a chinese restaraunt with a bit of white rice or the rare fried treat at a fair. Shouldn't we stick to the motto "everything in moderation" ?? When we deprive ourselves, especially if it is something we really enjoy, aren't we setting our selves up for failure?
I know that this post was not intended to be this way...and it really does provide some useful information..but the message from this post comes off in a negative way

@ 11:19am ET on December 30, 2009 I agree with the other posters that said moderation is key. I think this blog is off. I love white breat so I buy whole grain white only...I do not like the taste of wheat bread at all and will not eat it so there are alternative products available besides what is suggested and I do not like brown rice either although I do incorporate it when I can into meals as long as the flavor is not comprimised for the dish.
@ 1:12am ET on January 19, 2010 I eat white bread with high fibre, still losing weight...I think we cannot just avoid food because later we will have craving and eat even more!

@ 6:41am ET on September 2, 2010 Thanks for the list! It pays to know what to and what not to eat. There are times when we are trying to watch what we eat, but what we do not realize is that we are only watching how much we are eating. This is a short list but it contains so much information. A healthy and strong immune system can come from the food we eat through guidelines such as these, so we can have a healthy digestive system as well. Let us flush the toxins and wastes from our body with the help of high-fiber foods. These can help promote regular bowel movement and go through natural colon cleansing
